A Spark of Inspiration

When choosing a story to adapt, it’s crucial to find one that resonates deeply, both emotionally and thematically. Storia di una capinera became the perfect choice. The novel explores a clash that we all know well: the tension between our expectations and our true desires. For Maria, the central character, this conflict unfolds in her tug-of-war between her sense of duty and the intense personal longing she discovers when she’s briefly removed from her cloistered life.

Maria’s world is ruled by the expectations placed upon her — by family, by faith, and by the isolation of convent life. When she encounters life beyond the convent walls, she’s confronted with desires she never knew existed. This journey resonated with us as a timeless reminder of how dreams can emerge even in confined spaces, and how, often, we must choose between what we think we must do and what we truly feel drawn to.

The novel’s themes of faith, duty, and the cost of following one’s heart felt rich for exploration in a musical format. Music, after all, allows us to express the deepest of human emotions — the ones we can’t always say aloud. So, we set out to bring Maria’s story to life, to let her dreams, doubts, and conflicts echo through song and story.

The Sparrow reminds us that, like Maria, we are all navigating the delicate balance between societal expectations and our own desires. This powerful clash, a true spark of inspiration, is at the heart of our adaptation.
